Carson Grove ES News Update - Week of May 6th

As a staff, our thoughts remain with the community members impacted by the two recent fires at 1244 Donald Street.  This coming week, we will continue to work to support students affected by these incidents.  We will continue to provide meals for students and keep in contact with local community partners to support those who may be impacted.

The week of May 6th to 12th is Mental Health Week in the OCDSB. This year’s theme, “A Call to be Kind”, is centered on the healing power of compassion.  It reminds us to show compassion for ourselves and others, spread kindness in our schools and communities, and explore how compassion connects us all. To help support learning and reflection for our students, staff and families this week, the OCDSB’s Mental Health Team has prepared a few daily activities, resources, tip sheets, and more. Learn more on the OCDSB website.  Students will be learning more about mental health all week at Carson Grove.

Elementary Program Review - Public Meeting in the Area on May 13th at OTSS

The district has scheduled 7 public meetings for the Elementary Program Review.  These gatherings will feature small group discussions led by Elementary Principals, Trustees, and Superintendents.  Topics up for discussion include the current program's impact on student learning and well-being, proposed changes to enrich educational experiences, and the necessary support for smooth transitions to the new model.  These engagement sessions aim to gather valuable input from parents and families to support potential enhancements to the elementary program.  Can’t join us in person? You can still share your feedback on Engage OCDSB.

May is Asian and South Asian Heritage Month

Did you know that May is Asian and South Asian Heritage Month in Canada? It's a time for all Canadians to celebrate and reflect on the extensive and remarkable history of Asian Canadians from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western, Central and Southeast Asia, as well as their vital contributions to Canada's progress and prosperity.

We also want to take this time to acknowledge the historical hardships endured by Asian Canadians and the discrimination they still face today. It is important for all of us to work together to combat stereotypes and challenge anti-Asian racism. By speaking out against hateful language or actions, reporting incidents of discrimination are important steps to take to challenge anti-Asian racism.  Remember that even small actions can make a big difference in creating a more welcoming  and safe school.

May is Jewish Heritage Month

Jewish Heritage Month is a time for all Canadians to learn about the history, contributions, and culture of Canadians of Jewish heritage who have made significant impacts in communities across the country. We acknowledge and celebrate the rich cultural and historical legacy and wonderful contributions to literature, art, science and philosophy.

As we celebrate Jewish Heritage Month, it's important for us to not only learn about the culture and contributions of Jewish Canadians but also to take action against antisemitism..

We want to encourage you to take action against antisemitism by speaking out against hateful language or actions, reporting incidents of discrimination, and educating yourselves and others about the harmful effects of antisemitism.  By doing so, we can help make our school and our community more welcoming and safe for everyone.

Joke or Riddle of the Day!

A “Joke or Riddle of the Day'' is featured daily on the morning announcements.  There are two ways to share a possible joke/riddle of the day: Students will be able to pass along jokes/riddles at school in class using a Chromebook; or, they can suggest one with help from home by clicking here and completing a quick Google Form.  Based on the overwhelming response levels in the past, not all jokes/riddles are used during the announcements.  We do our best to find ones that match the time of the year and also try to make selections from a variety of classes.
