Building Literacy Skills with SATE

On March 28th, Carson Grove Elementary School welcomed 60 parents and guardians for a Literacy Session presented through the OCDSB’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) Inquiry. The goal of the session was to equip parents of kindergarten to grade 2 students with practical literacy tools that would help them in building their children’s reading, writing and oral language skills.

The session was led by SATE staff Jessica and Lily, who shared helpful strategies and take-away resources. The Ottawa Public Library supported the event by donating books, speaking about their children’s programs. Carson Grove Elementary School provided delicious refreshments.

Parents and caregivers appreciated the opportunity to discuss ways to build literacy skills at home. Here’s some of the feedback they shared:

“Today I understand more things, such as Narrate Life (a phonemic awareness activity), functional pencil grasp, and talking and reading for our kids.”

“I feel that everything was well explained.”

Thank you to all those who attended, and to the SATE, Carson Grove, and Ottawa Public Library staff who collaborated to make this event possible!
