Carson Grove ES News Update - Week of October 28th

We had a wonderful week at Carson Grove.  Photography students from Ottawa Technical Secondary School (OTSS) visited Carson Grove on Tuesday to take class and student photos.  It will take a month or two for the prints to be ready.  The OTSS students will also return to take individual photos for any students who were away on Photo Day.  Please stay tuned.  We will share the date once we hear back from the photographers.

The falling leaves continue to offer new opportunities for learning and play on the school yard. Students collected leaves for math, science, and French activities, to name a few.

Lastly, students did a wonderful job with this week’s fall lockdown drill.  The next one will take place in the spring.  Being well-prepared for an emergency is very important!

What is a Benchmark? Year 2 Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 Early Reading Screener Update

In September and October, all year 2 kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2 students at Carson Grove are completing an early reading screener.  Families of grade 1 and 2 students received a letter with results in the last week or two.  Year 2 kindergarten families are starting to get their letters home now.  After looking at the results letter, please also click here to see a second letter that explains: “What is a Benchmark for Reading?”.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher.

Happy Diwali (Oct. 31st)

Some Carson Grove families and staff will be celebrating Diwali on Thursday, Oct. 31st.  If your family is celebrating, may the festival of lights light up your home with happiness, laughter, prosperity, and health.  A very Happy Diwali to you and your family!

Reminder: Halloween / Wear Black and Orange Day at Carson Grove - Thursday, October 31st

Here are some expectations about Halloween / Black and Orange Spirit Day at Carson Grove:

  • A culture is not a costume.  Please avoid costumes that mimic traditional attire, stereotype, misrepresent, or make fun of an ethnic, religious, racial, or gender group.

  • Students should come to school wearing their costumes.

  • Keep costumes simple and be sure that they can be taken on and off independently. For example, the one piece jumpsuit-style costumes are very challenging for students to remove when going to the washroom, especially for our youngest students.

  • Instead of wearing a costume, wear orange and/or black if a costume is “too much for school” or if your family does not dress in costumes for Halloween.

  • Include daily-use face masks in costume designs.

  • Leave extra costume accessories at home.  Items that need to be held in a hand or worn on heads, including full masks, are a bit too much for school.

  • As a Kindergarten to grade 5 school, we ask that very scary costumes or makeup should only be worn at home in the evening.

  • Be allergy aware.  Please do not send in class treats or goody bags for classmates.  The thought is appreciated, but these items from home are not permitted at school.

Please contact the office or your child’s teacher if you have any questions or need some clarification.

Halloween Treats at Nutrition Break

It’s quite expected to see a treat or two in students’ lunches this week.  Please be sure to look at the ingredients before sending anything to school with your child.  There is a student (or several students) in our school with a severe life-threatening food allergy to peanuts and nuts (anaphylaxis).  This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to specific foods and can result in death within minutes.  Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, please continue to only send food to school that is free from peanuts or nut products. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Friday, November 8th is a PA Day - No School for Students

Friday, November 8th is a PA Day.  The school is closed for students.

Hindu Heritage Month

November is Hindu Heritage Month, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the important social, political, economic, and cultural contributions Hindu Canadians have made in Ontario, and to educate future generations about Hindu Canadians.

Holocaust Education Month

Recognized each year in November, Holocaust Education Month provides an important opportunity for students, staff, and families to learn more about the history and legacy of the Holocaust. We have an individual and collective duty to understand the Holocaust and to educate, prevent, challenge and address antisemitism in all its forms.
